I’m presenting at BESIG in Prague in November. If you’re there, come and say hi!
Session K2 11.45 – 12.30 Sunday Nov 10th
Title: Using our learners’ authentic documents to design English language style guides
Despite our learners writing the same English documents at work repeatedly, (e.g. technical specifications, contracts, etc.) they often make the same errors again and again. This can be both frustrating and time-consuming for teachers, so wouldn’t it be nice if there was some way to ease our correction burden whilst enhancing our learners’ autonomy and technical writing skills?
In ESP, designing templates and guides for our learners to follow often lacks learner buy in. Consequently, this session will describe a learner-centred project for making English language style guides to develop our learners’ writing/editing skills and reduce our correction load. The session will also give participants the opportunity to personalise the project for their own ESP teaching context, and participants will receive handouts to complete the project themselves.
This session is ideal for anyone with learners who write in English and the project can be applied to any ESP writing context.
